Tips for Saving Water in a Drought

Are you looking for effective preparation tips to help save water during droughts? A drought is an awful occurrence in which our water and food supply decrease due to periods of dryness and a lack of rainfall. Much of the United States is in a drought. Dry climates are at risk of wildfires or grass may start on fire. Lawns turn brown and we are watering our plants and grass more often. Moreover, water supply decreases and there must be water restrictions. Furthermore, wildlife loses their habitats, and they begin to die as a result, as well as plants and crops. Additionally, wildlife diseases increases and spreads. Because of these nasty drought conditions, I would like to give you some tips to save water in a during a drought.

Ideas to Help Save Water:

  • Put some buckets outside, so if there is rainfall, you'll collect some water, then filter the water to remove any pollution. A water filter can be a small filter that looks like a pitcher. I have one on my kitchen counter.

  • Take shorter showers. A recommended limit would be 5 minutes.

  • When waiting for the shower to be at a comfortable temperature, place a bucket to collect that running water. *You can use that to water your plants or for washing your hands, or preserve it for you pet.

  • Do not leave any water running as you brush your teeth. *Keep a small cup of water for rinsing afterwards.

  • Only start the dishwasher and washing machine when they are completely full. * For most part, dishwashers are very good at cleaning dishes, so you don't have to clean them before you put it in. As for washing machines, use cold water, not hot water. Also, some washing machines may have a "light wash" feature.

  • Make sure the inside and outside of your home are free of leaks. Check all pipes and faucets. * This is very important because leaky faucets and leaky pipes wastes gallons of water.

* To those who have Well Water: Check your well pump on a regular basis. There may be a leak if the automatic pump turns on and off when no water is being used.

  • Instead of having the water run as you are cleaning vegetables, you should have a bowl of clean water just for rinsing.

  • Do not use tap water. Drink from a water bottle instead. * You might want to have an extra bottle in the fridge to keep it cool.

  • Install low-flow shower heads or flow restrictors to save water. Many shower heads use roughly five to ten gallons per minute. However, low-flow shower heads reduce shower flow to roughly three gallons a minute. Do this prior to a drought.

Outside Water Conservation:

  • Grass clippings on the lawn may provide shade and encourage its nutrients back to the soil.

  • Do not put too much fertilizer on your lawn, as it will likely have a need for more water. I would find a better alternative.

  • Mulch the soil to preserve its moisture. Mulch also helps to suppress weeds that fight for water with landscape plants. Add a handful of mulch around trees and plants to minimize evaporation while keeping the soil cool. Use can use organic mulch specifically to elevate the soil and prevent weeds.

Remember that the amount of fertilizer increases the demand for water.

  • Make sure when you are watering your plants to save water. Water a little bit at a time instead of a long watering session. Make it short for your lawn to better take in moisture and avoid runoff.

To summarize, there is a shortage of water with a decrease in crop growth when a region is in a severe drought. Consequently, water restrictions are taken into place. Higher levels of drought cause the lakes, streams, and wells to lose lots of water. This would become extreme to exceptional drought, where water emergencies are present. These situations cause farmers to stop planting crops because they won't grow properly, and so the ecosystem process is threatened.

Remember to use water wisely. Turn the sink of when you are not using it.

I hope you will take some of these tips into account if you are worried about a present or future drought. Good Luck!
