Recycled Cotton

Brands that use recycled cotton for their fashion products are favorable vs those that just use newly made cotton. Vera Bradley is an example of a fashion brand that uses recycled cotton to make their bags, purses, accessories, and clothes. Not only that they make blankets, coolers, stainless steel bottles, clothings and more.

Recycled Plastic

Plastic is not a good material to produce, so it is better to create products out of recycled plastic, than newly created plastic. Several companies like to create some products out of plastic bottles and nets, etc. Some even take the plastic out of the ocean to collect the plastic for their creations.

What to Make with Recycled Plastic:

  • Plastic Bottles can be made from recycled plastic because PET (Polyethylene Terephthalate) is the easiest type of plastic to get recycled.

  • Make plastic scraps into beads for jewelry.

  • Shoes. There are brands, such as Adidas, has created shoes made from ocean plastic.

  • Clothes - made from recycled plastic, perhaps from the ocean or just recycled plastic bottles. M.M. LaFleur is a fashion brand that designs clothes from plastic bottles and other recycled materials.

  • Purses- made from recycled plastic, perhaps from the ocean and plastic bottles.

  • Grocery Bags

  • Chairs (for example, Humanscale Smart Ocean Chair). I have this one and I love it.

Upcycle

In addition to the 3 Rs: Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle, Upcycling is encouraged to be included. For instance, you can create vases out of any bottle or can. You can create shelving out of old furniture, and furthermore reduce waste in your home. You can get really creative by upcycling with DIY projects. DIY projects (Do It Yourself) can include making your own organizers, lamps, lighting, decorations, etc. You can repurpose anything whether it is old or no longer needed.

Upcycling Ideas

  • Create lamps or lights from old lightbulbs, or plastic bottles, etc. 

  • Design chimes and chandeliers from glass, plastic, or metal scraps. For instance: chimes made from tin can lids or bottle caps. 

  • Planters out of tin or aluminum cans, including paint cans. 

  • Wall Art out of many kinds of metal scraps, any shape or form. 

  • Vases out of cans and plastic bottles.
